WordPress

WordPress is a free and open-source Content Management System (CMS) written in PHP and MySQL. It includes many features such as a plugin architecture and a template system using a template processor that allows it to support more human-readable permalinks.

The software supports a variety of web content such as mailing lists and forums, media galleries and online stories, however, it is mostly recognised as being heavily associated with blogging. It has even been used for more obscure application domains for example pervasive display systems (PDS).

It provides a variety of different themes that can be installed by users to change the visual aspect of their website and its functionality without changing the core code or site content. WordPress also provides over 55,000 plugins with custom functions for users to extend the features and functionality of websites or blogs and tailor their sites to their specific needs.

It was first released in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as a project fork of b2/cafelog. In 2004 the competing system Movable Type lost many of their influential users because they migrated over to WordPress. By 2009 the Open Source CMS MarketShare Report confirmed that WordPress had the strongest brand than any open-source content management system.

It is now used by over 60 million websites, by 2018 30.6% of these were in the top 10 million websites and WordPress is now the most popular Content Management System used today.

Our development teams have used WordPress on a number of projects in the past and would be happy to discuss any potential projects you have in mind for the platform.

Do you have a project built in WordPress that you’d like to migrate to another platform? Or do you have something you’d like moved to this system? Check out our list of migrations for more details about how we work.
