MySQL

MySQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). It forms a main part in the LAMP open source web application software stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP/Python).

A wide variety of applications use this database such as TYPO3, MODx, Joomla, WordPress, Simple Machines Forum, phpBB, MyBB and Drupal. Multiple influential, large-scale websites use the database system including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and You Tube.

It is written in both C++ and C and it works cross-platform on many different systems. Two different editions are offered to users, both the open source MySQL Community Server and the MySQL Enterprise Server are built from the same code base. The Enterprise Server version is different because it has a series of proprietary extensions which install as server plugins.

This system was developed by a Swedish company called MySQL AB, founded by David Axmark, Allan Larsson and Michael “Monty” Widenius. The initial release was in 1995 and it was designed through the lightweight database management system mSQL for personal use. They took inspiration from the ISAM method (for creating, maintaining and manipulating indexes of key fields) and developed the idea to create an improved system that was much faster and more flexible. When they created a new SQL interface they purposefully kept the API the same as mSQL to keep the consistency and allow developers to use MySQL instead of the mSQL antecedent.

Our development teams have used MySQL on a number of projects in the past and would be happy to discuss any potential projects you have in mind for the platform.

Do you have a project built on this system that you’d like to migrate to another platform? Or do you have something you’d like moved over to this system? Check out our list of migrations for more details about how we work.
